To a very "hippy" New Year!

It has quite literally been almost a year since I last blogged! I started a journey since then into bettering my life, being there to chase beautiful couples on the happiest days of their lives, playing with my growing toddler and following my husband through this life without pain. I have (hopefully) reached the end to that path. Finally!!

I was cleared to start walking with all my weight on both legs earlier last month. Why is that special more than the rest of my 32 years of life? After 57 days in March and 42 days in December, and my 5th hip surgery to round out 2020 I can move one foot in front of the other. I am happy to say that I am off of crutches while walking small distances. This year rocked me to my core on top of our ongoing pandemic. The most difficult year of my life thus far.

The last 3 months have been relaxing, eye opening, frustrating, and fun. My last two surgeries were in October, and all things considering has gone smooth for the most part. I was familiar with what recovery looked like, and I don't know if it was that it’s not my driving leg; but has felt so much faster. I am still having to rest between moments of walking and find it hard to pace myself.

The season of Covid, with your son and husband going along with day to day things while you are stuck on the couch feels alone and a lot. Luckily, I have an amazing support system. My amazing husband Zach, my friends, family and always the smile of my son keeps me going. I also invest into helping my mental health by speaking to a therapist and my doctor. I am immensely thankful for them through navigating these times.

It is amazing that this year I have been home 6.5 months to spend time with the ones I love. Although, I am so much the person that has constant things on my to do list, have concerts to go to, friends to hang out with; and much like everyone else have struggled with letting all of those things go. There is so much time to think, reflect, and obsess. I personally have a problem with not having an objective or task to accomplish during the day and have slowly come to accept the new pace of life.

What a change 7 pieces of metal can make

What a change 7 pieces of metal can make

I was born with hip dysplasia on both sides, as well as clubbed feet. My parents only knew about my feet, as they were going in the same direction and they didn't do further xrays in the 80’s. I was corrected and moved onto having a normal childhood. I did not know about my hips until I was 28 years old. I was moving every day all day and running the (very) occasional 5k, and it came as a huge shock in what was entailed in its fixing.

I have been in pain moving, shooting, working and sleeping the last 7 years. As long as I have been in business! I didn't know what was wrong, but went to see a chiropractor first. No matter how many adjustments I had, I felt the same after a few days. Little did I know that the labrum muscles that surround my hip socket on the inside were torn on both sides. As well as, my sockets were too shallow to support the weight of my body. They needed to be cups instead of dishes, to put it simply. I was told that I needed surgical intervention to make my sockets stronger by moving them to a better angle and reshaping. To cut the pelvis in three spots, rotate, and screw in place. As well as take out these muscles inside the joint and replace them, as they couldn’t heal on their own. I was obviously overwhelmed, but slowly accepted that this needed to happen based upon my continued pain. Even the MRI’s for these were painful, and I was quickly thrust into the seriousness of the surgeries and recovery that had to take place.

I sadly didn’t take this pain seriously and follow my referrals to an orthopedic surgeon until I was so newly pregnant that I didn’t know yet, 3 years ago while going up to Breckenridge to relax with my photographer girlfriends. A good time to decompress and think before things get real before I even knew I needed it.

I started with two procedures on my right side this January, and went back to work full time as a medical receptionist 3 months later. Little did I know, I suffered from a bone infection when I was opened up, and my screws in my pelvis started rejecting out of my body. These bumps in my skin I thought were scar tissue, but increasingly got more and more painful.

I went back in to have them replace these screws, and I was administered antibiotics through a picc line for 6 weeks. Anyone who has a latex or adhesive allergy and has to have them both on your skin without question can tell you how painful it is to have bandages on 100% of the time. This catheter in my underarm went straight to my heart, so keeping it clean and covered was key. I had a nurse come to change my bandages and let my skin breathe for a few minutes once a week. Admittedly I risked infection by itching so bad multiple times that my dressing came off between visits. I have underlying eczema exasperated by sweat, and it seemed that when I sweat, and in the middle of summer- it got significantly more painful. I didn’t know I was allergic before this happened, and I really don’t wish that on anyone. Self administering antibiotics once a day, keeping it refrigerated and needing to do it in a sterile environment were challenging with a toddler.

Look at those FEET!!!!!

Look at those FEET!!!!!

I feel like I have overcome so much, and it has felt like so much less time than it has been from start to end. I have been working with physical therapy to get stronger. I have been taking this break to refresh business workflows and update my website and media. I am so grateful for a literal team of doctors and surgeons that have made have reconstructed my body. Dr White and Dr Swann, among so many others, I will never have enough thank you's to say. Onto the next chapter!

Even despite these things, I have had the honor of shooting 3 weddings, 3 couples, 3 seniors, 2 gender reveals, 4 families and 1 themed shoot this year. Thanks to everyone that continues to support and believe in me, and my clients that work with me through all of it. It means the world!

So much love to these people!

So much love to these people!

Rocky Mountain National Park Elopement / Brittni and Thomas

Hello, its Nicole! It’s been a bit since I’ve checked in, and truthfully it was because I underwent 2 major surgeries last month. I’ve had hip dysplasia since birth, and almost to the day after I was diagnosed 2 years ago I finally had a chance to change my life for the better.

So many portrait sessions and weddings I was in pain while shooting, but pushed through to be there for my clients capturing their lives. I can’t wait to be fully healed and to be able to continue photographing to my hearts content. Not to mention chasing around my precious little boy who is now 16 months! Where does that time go? Its really hyper speed once you have kids, I never realized.

A little blog for your Monday about sweet Brittni & Thomas. They decided to elope in December, and they actually reached out to me and see if I was available the day before they had their ceremony! My friend Kendra suggested while doing Brittni’s facial that morning that they needed this event photographed, even if it was just the two of them. Sadly it wasn’t able to work out, so they had an intimate, self solemnized ceremony on the trails at Lily Lake in Estes Park. They met me the day after for a session at Moraine Park!

The snow was so fresh, it was crisp but not too cold, and there weren’t many clouds in the sky. These two have been together for many years, and share one babe. They actually have another on the way, Brittni’s belly is so so cute! You’d never know they weren’t from Colorado by the natural way they dressed. They came a long way from New Hampshire to say I do.

Congrats again you two, I cannot wait for you guys to become parents again ♡

Elopement/ Jennifer & James Hajek

Let me start off by saying, elopements are my ABSOLUTE favorite! Jennifer and James decided that Colorado was the place they wanted to come get married (on their 3 year anniversary!) We planned for weeks, and decided on the gorgeous Bear and Dream Lake trail. There aren't words that describe the landscape, it literally takes my breath away.

We awed while hiking, looking at the perfect blue sky and 60 degree weather in Rocky Mountain National Park. The phrase, "if you don't like the weather in Colorado, just wait 20 minutes," was definitely true this Tuesday. The day prior it was cold, and the weekend before it was a "bomb cyclone." Needless to say, they got super lucky.

The two of them have this love and respect for each other that is effortless. They just stare at each other with kindness in their smiles, and walk along each other like they've already done it for 50 years. When I asked them to kiss and interact, they just melted together. Both fearlessly running across the frozen lakes, climbing rocks, and having snowball fights. They are just so much fun!

They travelled all the way from Shreveport, LA and met while both a part of a soccer team. She is a cardiology nurse, and he is a part of the Army Reserves. He proposed on Valentine's Day and the rest is history! I adored each second, getting to hear about thier love and see this Colorado view.

Congratulations again, you two!

Maternity Session/ Rebecca & Sammy

I remember being pregnant like it was yesterday. In actuality, it was 7 months ago. Its so funny how time flies, and how everyone tells you- but you don't remember as it passes.

You are a mermaid, Jessica Rabbit & Moana all in one. (Or Mo-mama, as she says.) My friend, you owned this shoot, had a perfect “smize,” and are so unbelievably beautiful. Last month, I had the pleasure of joining miss Rebecca and Sammy in Fort Collins to shoot, and today he is here! We had beautiful sunny weather, and this location is one of my mountain favorites. Sammy is one lucky man to get to have you as a mama, Josh as a dad and two big brothers to look up to. Thanks so much for for inviting me to share this day with you, Rebecca! Here are some of my favorite images from this great day!

Congratulations you guys!

Jeff, Veronica, and Baby Mouse!

These two. I adore their beautiful souls and the fierceness they have in the close moments that I have witnessed. I’ve blushed, even! They just display that passionate, deep connection whenever you look at them. Last year they got married, and these babes showed those mountains what love was!

The year in between then and now, they were blessed to find out they are expecting! Jeff and Veronica have a very special love for Disney. They got engaged at Disneyworld, and even walked down the aisle to “a dream is a wish your heart makes.” (Which don’t even get me started on the amount of waterworks that ensued witnessing.) Now, they get to welcome their baby mouse next year! I’m seriously crying while writing this guys, they are the cutest people ever.

They told me they would be spending their one year wedding anniversary in Colorado and wanted me to document their love again. I was so pleased to meet the (three!!!) of them at Mary’s Lake in Estes Park, Colorado. There it is folks, L. O. V. E.

Steven and Bryanna Mitts // 6•24•17

I have had the pleasure of knowing Bryanna for years, and was so pleased to be able to meet Steven and be there for them on their big day! These two have been with each other for almost 6 years, and you can tell by the way they interact. They’re so comfortable together.

This wedding was one of the most fun experiences that I’ve been a part of. True to them and their personalities- simple and sports oriented! It’s no surprise I was over the top excited that they chose a football, specifically Denver Broncos themed wedding! So much fun, bright, and down to the last detail, was all about love and each other.

These two stayed traditional and didn’t see each other before the moment she walked down the aisle, or her wedding ring! (Which is absolutely stunning!!!) I adored the classic white dress Bryanna chose, and that these two are so family centric. Every time I looked at them, they were smiling ear to ear with their family and friends. Congratulations to the both of you, I wish you a lifetime of happiness!

Shoot & Share Competition 2017!

shootandshare2017

This year, I entered into the international photography contest hosted by Shoot & Share. It's the world's largest photo competiton. 74,000 people, 225,507 photos total and 32,622,327 votes cast overall crossing 149 countries. WOW, what an experience!

I was hesitant at first, questioning if I had what it took to get anywhere, and I had so much reassurance along the way from friends and family members, helping me deceipher the images I chose for entry. They allow 50 photos to enter, into 25 different catergories. I selected to put my images into 15 of those! The craziest thing to me is that it is a completely anonymous voting process, and anyone in the whole world with an internet connection can scroll through and make their selections.

Over one month's time, it was so addictiing for me- and so many others in my photography community, as well as those who helped me along the way to pick the best of four when they popped up over and over. It became so thrilling to potentially see my own images!

After this month came to a close, there was a month of rolling out results. I couldn't believe how nerve racking it was to wait. Prior to this, I'd only entered one contest ever. I was absolutely OUT OF MY MIND, blown away THAT I PLACED! 7 of my favorites made it! In the photos below I will go through the full results.

Thank you to all my amazing clients who let me have the opportunity to share their sweet moments with them- and create some beautiful images. All the support from family, friends and my photography community blew me away through these last couple months! Thanks so much ❤️ Enjoy!

Lularoe with Jennifer in Colorado- Fashion Shoot

I am so incredibly excited to finally share this day with you all! My best friend owns a very successful Lularoe business based out of Fort Collins, Lularoe with Jennifer from Colorado! Jennifer approached me with an amazing idea this last fall about how every image that showcases her clothing doesn’t necessarily show off the clothing in each style in every body type possible. That got her thinking- how do we make this idea come to life?

Fast forward a couple months, and she brought together so many women, with all different stories, at different ages, and different bodies. Jennifer wanted to showcase how amazing Lularoe is at making you feel comfortable in your own skin with amazing styles to choose from. These women were friends, colleagues, and her business customers. We collectively gathered up lots of vintage pieces for our setup at a gorgeous Gustav Swanson Natural Area in Fort Collins on the Poudre River. We captured how style, comfort, and simple accessories can make every woman feel beautiful! A big thank you to Fusion Nightclub in Fort Collins for letting us host a place where we could collectively meet and set up. In this beautiful, big open space, we began our day preparing. Community over competition is a huge movement that I’m behind, and I love that our locals come together to help each other. We were beside ourselves with the generosity we were shown by this small business!

Have you heard of Lularoe? They are a company that believes that every individual is powerful, important and has an amazing story. Their creator simply wanted to work from home while raising her kids. This is exactly what Jennifer wanted to do when she found this great company, and she has succeeded in making such a successful brand for herself! A little bit about this consultant- she has 3 little babies (but not so little; 6,7, and 10 year olds,) at home. She just finished her Associate’s degree at Front Range Community College last semester, and she started at Colorado State University on to finish her Bachelor’s this winter! She's addicted to coffee, concerts, and is such an amazing cook. I am so inspired by her determination, drive, and positivity for every goal she has in mind. Owning this business has blossomed her creativity, social personality and I am proud of her through this amazing journey! She pushes me towards my own goals, helps me with my business and makes sure I never give up on myself. I am tearing up writing this, because through the years of us being best friends (9 years!!,) collaborating with her is so effortless, and I really couldn't have asked for a better partner in crime to share these moments in life with! Thank you so much, Jennifer for including me in this experience!

“Lularoe has suddenly become more than a way to pay bills and hopefully you can see that in the way I interact and communicate with my customers.”
— Jennifer Wood

I am a huge supporter of this great company, and I own quite a few of their different styles. In fact, their leggings are my go to every day clothing item to wear (SO COMFORTABLE!!!,) and I prefer to shoot weddings exclusively in their Nicole dress. I feel as though I have to love their dress anyway because of the name being mine- but seriously! It’s such a great fit and feel all day for me.

I hope you enjoy looking through this great day of laughs, babies running around, makeup and hair galore, big, bright patterns, antique, vintage props and of course- women coming together. It was seriously such a great day of showing off stylish, comfortable clothes. Thank you so much to our amazing partners, lending their services and time to make all of this possible!

Sarah + Jeremiah Carson // September 4, 2016

Ecclesiastes 4:12- Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

This verse was the inspiration for a beautiful day. I had been waiting to witness this lovely couple become one for such a long time! Sarah and Jeremiah- along with their sons Kai and Eli wed atop a hill in Moraine Park in Estes Park, Colorado. It was a bright, beautifully sunny day and the light was just purely magical. The bride and groom have such a connection, an understanding, patience and are so truly kind. I have never seen the two of them do more than smile like kids at one another. Every time Sarah talks about Jeremiah, there is a beauty, a radiance, and true happiness that dances across her face. He looks at her like the world lives and breathes through her. I have captured their story throughout the years, through their pregnancy and beyond. Sarah and Jeremiah have been tied to each other from their first date. He has joyfully embraced Kai as his son, they brought Eli into this world; and the 4 of them have built a home with each other, their 2 cats and dog that anyone in this world would be absolutely lucky to have. Sarah's best friend, and maid of honor is also one of my best friends. Sarah and Jennifer have been friends since middle school. Their stories together are so amazing, they got in way too much trouble together, and also had too much fun; just like all best friends should. To see the two of them interact on Sarah and Jeremiah's special day was an experience I will never forget. There were so many times I wiped tears from my eyes getting to see these moments come together. Seeing my own childhood best friend get married, I understand the memories, the dreams of this day and how crazy it is once it is actually THE day. It's emotional to watch someone you've grown up alongside join their lives with their new best friend for life. As we made the drive up the canyon to the ceremony, there were no jitters, just readiness in the days' excitement. We watched Sarah greet Jeremiah one last time walking up a trail to her fiance. They prayed, read heartfelt vows about love, patience, understanding, family and God. Braiding a very meaningful rope together- with the verse, "though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken;" and poured sand in unity, layer by layer as a family. Jeremiah scooped Sarah up and dipped her so elegantly as their kiss sealed this intimate ceremony for us. It is elk mating season, and very popularly up in Moraine Park. We watched the flood of cars pouring out of Rocky Mountain National Park trying to get a glimpse at the nature, sun and sky, but little did everyone know that we had the best views that day. The bride and groom celebrated with hugs, to their family and friends, and I may have made them kiss for me a little too long. Their portraits are so unique and their connection begged for some embraces to rival our gorgeous venue! Weddings- especially elopements, are so much more fun for me to be a part of because of the pure serenity of such a great moment only shared with a few people. I feel so connected to my couples when it is just us, them in front of my lens, and Colorado sky giving us beautiful days to spend together. With a quick signature on the back of a truck bed, a few shots of Sarah and Jennifer's bouquets, some ring fun on pinecones (my favorite,) our day ended atop our mountain we shared the bride and groom's love with. Thank you so much to all of the Carson family, and everyone that put this day together. I was so ecstatic to be a part of such an epic love story such as yours! Here are some photos from their gorgeous day of marriage!

Veronica + Jeff Ash

A DREAM IS A WISH YOUR HEART MAKES...

Jeff and Veronica are some of the most adorable, authentic couples I've ever photographed. They light up around each other in a way that I don't see that often. They melt into another and you can tell that they're best friends. For real guys, how beautiful are they?

A simple guitarist strumming "A dream is a wish your heart makes," had me hiding tears while their precessional started, a walk down the aisle from Veronica's brother was so touching. Some of the most heartfelt vows were exchanged as a big, blue clear sky hung open to the gorgeous Rocky Mountains behind them. "I promise to always hold your hand when we go over bridges," Jeff said. He had me laughing because I too, have a fear of them. They compliment each other so well, even with their words exchanged. I would've guessed they wrote them together. Tears were shed, family was thanked for all their love and support, and we all witnessed pure magic. After the ceremony, they kissed for me (a lot,) sang some N'sync, and the groomsmen got to walk down the mountain as t rex's. I was elated to witness their goofiness and friendships.

These cuties met in 2013 while working at a local coffee shop, and have been together for 2 years but it looks like they've been lovers much longer with the way they interacted. All the way from Indiana, they decided to make Colorado the space they would say I do in front of their closest friends and family. They enjoy visiting local coffee shops, trying new beers, pairing them with cigars (how awesome,) and all around, adventure and be the coolest two cats ever. They claim to not like picture taking, but their passion determines that that is a lie!

May the two of you have the best adventures of a lifetime, I was honored to document your magnificent souls! xoxo

Senior | Sasha

Sasha was a lovely muse for such a gorgeous winter day out in downtown Fort Collins. Although chilly, it was worth getting out in the elements to capture her artistic and unique spirit.

We went through all the quirky, beautiful alleys searching for fun backdrops. Everywhere we turned, no matter where, only enhanced her gorgeous features!  Sasha graduates this year as a senior and is an aspiring arts major.

We headed down towards old town, and found some amazing murals to put her up against. She is seriously such a model! Walking down even farther, we found more and more artsy pieces placed for what seemed perfect placement to use for our amazing session! We found one of the “pianos about town” and it served well as a whimsical prop for showcasing her love for art.

My favorite part of this entire day with this lovely lady was getting to step into Rocket Fizz for some fun pictures with all the candy you could imagine. She really embraced this silly location, and I feel like it balanced the grown up, model feel of the shoot with the facet of, that she’s still a teenager, and who doesn’t love candy?

Congrats, Sasha! I’m so happy to have been able to capture your fun and amazing spirit!!!
